About Us

Livestock

The White family have been custodians of the land at Afflington Manor Farm, outside Corfe Castle, and Compact Farm at Worth Matravers for over twenty years. Robin Samways is the Farm Manager in charge of the day-to-day running of the farm.

Together, Robin and the Whites run a beef herd of around 170 cattle, which are predominantly of cross-bred Charolais, Simmental, Aberdeen Angus and Hereford. This is a home-reared herd producing finished cattle at around 19-22 months old. The cattle are fed a grass-based diet, grazing fields across the farm during the drier months. The cattle are housed during the winter months and are fed home-grown silage, home-grown rolled barley and 2% concentrated feed.

There are also around 130 breeding ewes on the farm, which are all Poll Dorset. The sheep herd is fully grass-fed and free to graze across the farm throughout the year. During lambing time, pregnant ewes are free to graze during the day and are moved into a stone barn during the night so that we can keep an eye on any lambing activity. Ewes and new lambs spend a day or so in straw pens before being turned out to pasture once we’re happy that ewe and lamb have bonded and the lamb is healthy and feeding well.

All of our animals are reared to the highest welfare standards and are treated with care and respect. We hand pick our animals as they become close to finishing and work with a small, independent slaughterhouse. All of our meat is then aged and butchered back on the farm, in our own cutting room facilities. The husbandry and production of the Afflington livestock really does shine through in the eating.

Wild Venison

As part our our commitment to managing the countryside in our care, the deer population across the farm is managed by our in-house Deer Stalker. Sika and Roe deer are abundant across the Purbecks. Managing their numbers helps to promote a healthier herd and protects the farm’s ancient woodland habitats and crops. It also helps to reduce the high number of car accidents in the area.

Venison is a sustainable and healthy meat choice that is high in protein, vitamins and minerals and low in fat and cholesterol.
